Eye Infection in B. subocularis

4everherpn Feb 18, 2004 05:10 PM

I am about to inherit a suboc, but I have the task of healing an eye infection. I wish my digital camera worked so that I might take picture of it. It is in his left eye. His eye is puffed out and all white and cloudy. You can faintly see his actual eye underneath. It is so swollen that his whole left side of his head is swollen to wear it looks like he might have difficulty in eating. It reminds me of someone with an absessed tooth.

If anyone has any idea of treatment ideas that would be great. I am gonna tell you what I am going to do. I have added a heat rock to his cage so that he get some warmth. He was in brumation when this occured. I want to try to soak him tomorrow in some warm water. I want to try to induce a shed and see if the infection might clear up. I was thinking of taking him out of his cage of aspen chips and placing him in a cage of newspaper. I don't know if that will make a difference.

Let me know anything. Thanks. I'll be recieving him tomorrow.

That sounds like it may be a respiratory infection. A symptom of resperatory infections sometimes include bulging eyes. I don't have a solution for it, but someone on this forum should.

Best of luck,

tom

Snakes do get actually eye infections as well as what was described before. If it's under the spectacle and the surrounding tissue is inflamed, just take it to a vet and get it on antibiotics. Please don't wait and maybe see if it gets better, you don't want the infection to become systemic, get into the bone or the brain, both of which are right around the area you're describing as inflamed. It'd also be good to get it cultured.

Okay. What if you are in an area where no vet exists? I've not heard of a good herp vet in my area. I am going to put him on paper to see if he might be allergic to the aspen that he is on. I've added a heat rock to his cage to increase his body temp to help his own immune system fight it off. He is a pretty old snake from what I hear, but do not have a definate age. I am going to try what I can to help him out. He is coming home with me today and will seperated from the rest of my herps. He needs a sterile environment and I know that lab is not the best place for him. ANy more suggestions?
