ackie courtship and biting

sera Feb 18, 2004 05:17 PM

I have a pair of ackies about a year and 4 months old, the female is 11.5 cm snout to vent and the male is 16 cm snout to vent. Today I noticed the male chasing the female around the cage and biting her. he bit down on the base of her tail and hung on for a bit then proceeded to bite her head. These were all hard bites and the female was struggling and trying to flee. At first I thought this was just some courtship activity but I noticed blood had been drawn from both bites and realised the male may be more aggressive than he should be. What do you guys think? Is this normal courtship behavior?

The picture is of the male ackie showing me how mad he is that
I interupted him.

are you sure they are male and female?????

Normal for the male to dominate over the female yes, normal for them to be that agro not always.

My big male water is that way to his girl, my tegu's are that way to each other. But doesn't make it normal I don't think.

Most of my reptiles are gentle with each other.

Goodluck

Hello, Biting is not part of normal reproductive behavior. Biting is part of behavior caused by individuals being restricted in movement. Good luck FR
