Handling classes in virtual reality?

MsTT Feb 18, 2004 06:17 PM

Yes, it does sound like a far fetched notion, but bear with me a moment while I explain. I've been fooling around in a virtual chat world called There (there.com) which has a remarkably good 3D graphical engine and the ability to share video, sound and images with other people in realtime. It would make an excellent conference system to hold "face to face" classes and meetups when the participants can't all be in the same physical space.

If you're interested, maybe take a poke around the system and let me know whether you think a realtime class meeting will work. Be sure to put my avatar name (Lorien) as your referrer. The system gives me virtual items when I refer people who join up, and that's what I will need in order to host the classes. However you don't actually need to join up. You get 14 days free, and there is nothing stopping you from signing up again under a different name when your two weeks are up.

Anyhow no one can get bitten attending these classes, so if nothing else they'll be pretty safe. No virtual antivenom needed. LOL

Hey TT,
I think it would be a good tool for a begining introduction type thing but they will have to work with the real thing in time...... Like they pass a test on the VR and then they can start trianing with the real thing......

I am definitely not saying that taking an online class and watching videos and photos will qualify someone as a snake handler with no other experience. They will still have to find a way to get real life learning experiences. But at least an online class would be a start. Anyone up for it?

I'm up for it. Sounds like fun.

I'd be up for it...i'm not entirely new to hots, but experience is experience, VR or not...just got a beautiful B. dendrophila today, a little nervous, but very managable. She rode a hook pretty well (yes, I know the bite isn't that bad, but bad habits are very quickly learned and very hard to unlearn)...I have no first-hand experience with elapids, but in the future that's what I want to be my focus. I have a fair bit of knowledge and experience with crotalids though, and one of the main reasons i got the mangrove was to get used to a large, agile, and irratable snake WITHOUT having to worry about being killed by it.
