Here is one of my '03 holdbacks. He is from NC stock and just started taking unscented pinks, though irregularly. I hope to produce some nice red/orange babies this year.

So it is a phase of the eastern Hog? How long have you worked with easterns?
A.C.,
Nice looking eastern! How are the similis doing, on runt pinks yet?
Scott
Scott,
Thanks for the compliment! he's a beauty ain't he? This is my 4th year working with platyrhinos, and he is probably the most colorful one I have come across.
The garters are doing ok. The male takes scented pink tails. The large female is now tame enough (and big enough) to take pinks from the jittery hands of my students, but the smaller female I have to assist feed. Once the tail is in her mouth, she feeds, but she won't take it on her own. I don't foresee any probs though as she has good body weight. They are some great snakes! With all the speculation on hognose "venom", I found it best to keep similis, goini kings, and northern pines in my classroom as all are hardy and easy to handle (Well almost on the garters)!

A.C.,
Glad to hear the similis are doing well for you. I wouldn't forcefeed the one the mousetails as this will stress it out.
It was feeding on feeder fish while in my care. I'd recommend continuing to feed it feeder fish and mice parts and gradually decrease the amount of fish/scenting until it eats unscented.
Scott
PS To answer your question you posed in the garter forum, one needs a permit to be able to keep San Frans and, to my understanding, is next to impossible to get. It is a shame as this species is so prolific in captivity that they have to seperate the sexes! (Ironice isn't it!).
