mealworms as staple?

8tay8 Feb 18, 2004 10:06 PM

my baby leo likes mealworms alot better than crix. and its also hard to get her to notice them because the crix are babies too. im thinkin of feeding her mealworms as a staple only until shes an adult because then, the crix will also be full grown.

thanks

mealworms as a staple are just fine, there are many people here...including myself who feed mealworms instead of crickets, mainly b/c of parasite risks.

most everyone exept one adult female eats a staple of mealies and super worms... that one female (i am mad at her right now) only eats crickets

Pros:

1. Mealworms are very easy to breed = cheap feeders

2. Mealworms are easy to catch for leos

3. Seem to carry fewer parasites than crickets

Cons:

1. Lots of chitin

2. Are slow moving so may not get some leos attention

The freshly shed mealworms are a little softer and have less formed chitin shells and are easier to digest.

If properly gutloaded they make a great staple diet. Supers are even better since they have more digestible part to undigestible part ratio and my leos seem to like them a lot more than mealworms (I think they're also on the more nutritious side). So whenever your gecko gets big enough (~20 grams) try a small super and see how it goes, you'll probably be surprised at the response.

Mealies make a good staple as people have said before, but it all depends on your leo's taste preferences. My leo turns her nose up at meal worms and will only eat crix.
(She's cute too, cause she wiggles her tail just before snatching up a cricket...I think she enjoys the hunt.)

I think my female may be the same way! I went to all mealworms during the winter months (as crickets are so much better kept outside), and although she eats the mealies from my hand, I do not think they move enough for her. She does that tail wiggle, and then pounces on the crickets too - it is so funny to watch. Sometimes she pounces so hard that her nails rip the paper towels
