Are my frogs stressed???????

frogger12 Feb 19, 2004 09:33 AM

I'm trying to figure out why my 2 dumpy treefrogs are brown. My tank is 3ft. long x 2ft. wide x 3ft. tall. The top is a screen lid and the sides have a screen door insert. I have an undertank heater and during the day the temp. stays around 75 degrees and at night around 65 degrees. They get fresh water every day. They have two water bowls and one other water bowl that has a bubbler in it. Lots of hiding places and plants to climb on (fake and 1 live). When I get them out of their cage they turn green. The boy (Jade) turns lime green and the girl (Angel) turns blue/green. Can anyone tell me why they do that? Is the temp. wrong? Are they cold? When I get them out they always feel cold and after I hold them and they warm up that is when they change colors. What should I do?

i can tell your trying to make it sound as thought your frogs like you oicking them up. i have a dumpy frog who is brown when hes in a good mood, and green when he is stressed. some of them are just backwards!

Well that last post didn't help you much, so let me see if I can. I've had White's for 2 years and read a ton of books on them, so here are my suggestions. Most tree frogs have the ability to change color, and do so quite often. When resting or relaxed, White's commonly turn to the olive or brown color you're seeing. When alert (or sometimes when stressed) they will change back to their "regular color." Your vibrant green colored frog is a "normal" White's, while the one that turns to a blue color is called a Blue Phase White's. So I would relax because your froggies are simply showing you how relaxed they are in their home.
Your set-up sounds excellent for them! My only suggestion would be to try raising the temp. a bit. Most books & breeders recommend a daytime temp. of 80-86 degrees & a nighttime temp. of 68-73. Try placing a heatlamp with a low-wattage bulb over one corner of the aquarium. If you notice that your frogs start resting under the light during the day, you should keep it there. If they don't care for it & rest at the opposite end of the tank (where the temp. isn't really affected by the lamp), then you can remove it (every frog is different). I hope this helps

i gave some advice from my own experience. nothing else seemed wrong so whats the problem?

I just meant it wasn't very informative. You just told her that you thought she was trying to tell us how much her frogs like her. That didn't really answer her question...
