Handling and Cleaning

batman78 Feb 19, 2004 09:34 AM

Hi everyone,

Since GTP's are somewhat aggressive and difficult to handle...how do you clean your tanks? I have a relatively tall glass tank...so the only opening is from the top.

Also, which breed would be best in temperament of all the arboreal snakes?

Thanks for the help!

Alex

Not all are aggressive. I have 16 chondros and all but 2 are sweet as can be. It all depends on the individual animal. Some arus are nasty, and some biaks are babies.

As far as caging, I would recommend getting something other than glass tanks. Chondros need fresh air circulation and it's very difficult to provide in aquariums. Good luck if you decide to get into them. They are addictive.

Thanks for the reply! But how do you handle the 2 nasty ones? Gloves? Or some kind of sliding bottom tray for the cage? What happens when there's a need to touch the snake, ie treat it for some disease? 1" fangs are pretty scary!

Also, how are Amazon Trea Boas' temperament in general?

I'm basically looking for a "sweet" arboreal type snake that won't decide to strike at whim? Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

For the two nasty one, I just use a hook. It's pretty easy to move them around. It's not like they're out of control. A light spray of water will usually calm them down to. Just spray them before you decide to get them out.

As for a sweet arboreal, I would recommend a chondro or jungle carpet python. Both are about the same size and require similar care. Carpets are a little more tolerable of temp and humidity, but both are easy captives with the right care.

I couldn't tell you about amazons, but from what I've heard, most are not the tamest of snakes. You'll have to ask someone that keeps them. Keep in mind, all snakes have individual personalities.

Good luck.

Hey Brandon, who is that snake? she looks exactly like my new gm 02 06 "biak outcross" and I mean everything, I believe Jezabel and Barnose are her parents, I will get some pics and post them.

As far as the snakes, Chondros have some specs they will need to thrive, humidity, temps, feeding rituals, caging is very important. Jungle carpets , jungle diamonds are great beautiful arboreal snakes that do require alot of the same husbandry as chondros, but they are much hardier, I do have an Amazon tree boa, He is really cool, but its not a big deal to get bit by him, also a much cheaper animal if your just getting into it.

check out the below link it will answer alot of questions if not all of them , its soley oriented by the pros. on chondros-d

That snake is a female that I produced 3 years ago. I'm working on proving it's potency as being another High Yellow bloodline. Here's a pic of her brother.

I can only agree with jungles and jungle crosses being hardier as babies. Once chondros get past the delicate stage, there's no stopping them.....at least in my experience. Maybe I've just been lucky.

BTW, are you going to the symposium this weekend?

I actually planned on it, but I became single this week " its been very rough" therefore I now have my three dogs with no one else to take care of them, and no kennel this late in the game, I instead made myself work appointments all day every day this weekend to clear the down time. And set up shipping dates for tomarrow to recieve some snakes, A "rob Worrell lime girl" and two "wameniaks" Not trying to get to personal, just not a very good time. I really wanted to though. d

The biggest problem with amazons is that most of them are still wc. There really isn't a huge demand for them so most big breeders don't bother with them. I had a few of them some time ago and the ones I had were some of the most demanding snakes I have ever had. They were easily agitated, and would strike out and evert their cloaca and musk when ever held. Now if you are able to find cbb babies then I would say go for it because they are fascinating and interesting snakes. they are also priced well below chondros so I feel they are a better choice to see if it is the snakes you want to go after(arboreal). Hope this helps. Todd

Todd, I agree completley, I find it interesting that no one has really played the color morphs, and genic lines, as they are so capable of having so many colors and patterns, not to say that people havent, but they are very cool looking snakes, big cat eyes , long thin body, its a treat to see them explore. but i tell ya, i am so sick of getting bit by my guy, it doesnt hurt, but there will always be that response to getting bit instilled in humans, damien
