Vision Cage - Male Burm - Escape Stories?

feflicker Feb 19, 2004 11:33 AM

I just picked up a Vision Cage... The wife is worried my 9' male burm (who is very mellow) is going to be able to get out. I have a display cabinet style lock on the glass.

Can he get out?

Here are the scenarios I thought up:
- Break Glass
- Break Glass Track
- Lift Glass out of Track and Push Out Glass
- Break Showcase Lock

Has anyone ever had an escape by these (or any other) means?

I actaully took 2 6ft visions cut holes in one side of each and bolted them together to make one 12ft cage for my anacondas(which are as nasty as they come). The glass is thick so you dont have to worry about the snake breaking it, the snake will not be able to lift the glass out of the runners either. The only thing I recommend to put your wifes ind at ease is to buy a lock for it. Just in caes u forget to close the sliding doors all the way. That is the only way the snake will be able to get out. Hope this helps.

Here are the scenarios I thought up:
- Break Glass
- Break Glass Track
- Lift Glass out of Track and Push Out Glass
- Break Showcase Lock

of the 4 listed heres my thoughts

-As long as they use safety glass no worries in breaking glass

-I dont think but cant tell ya for sure isnt there track aluminum ? if its plastic my only thing to be carful of is to not drop anything on the tracks but the snake shouldnt break it

- this could be a feasable theroy , again i havent looked at the deoth of vision tracks but since the installation of there doors or any sliding doors is based on lifting out it could happen . I dont use any track on my new line of plastic cages i machine my own out of the plastic its self this way i can make the tracks alot deeper then average tracks . and thus lesson the ability for a snake to push the glass out of a deeper channell then standard track

-the showcase lock breaking shouldnt be a issue unless its just a miserably cheap lock .

>>- Break Glass

This might be a possibility... If you're concerned about this, you might want to swap the plate glass included with a normal Vision cage for tempered glass (though I'm not entirely certain that would help). Or, see if it would be possible to place a slightly thicker piece of glass in the tracks.

>>- Break Glass Track
>>- Lift Glass out of Track and Push Out Glass

I wouldn't spend much time worrying about either of these possibilities. The track on my Visions is aluminum and seems unlikely to break. I have a difficult time getting the glass out of the tracks myself, so I think it unlikely a snake could do it. Unless your glass is really loose for some reason?

>>- Break Showcase Lock

If your locks are like mine and you use them correctly, I don't think this is possible. My locks are the standard type you see used with sliding by-pass doors: there's a U-shaped piece of metal with one side of the 'U' longer than the other. The long side is located between the glass doors and you slide the lock cylinder onto it.

I haven't ever had anyone escape from one of my Vision cages... though I don't keep anything nearly as big as a Burm!

Thanks for all the info!

Wow, Anacondas didn't get out of it? :D

I am glad everyone seemed to come to the conclusion that I did, it is not really possible unless *I* make a mistake.

The glass is very thick, and it looks to be tempered. Don't they come with Tempered glass?

The tracks are aluminum, and strong. The glass is tight as well, and I did have a hard time getting it in myself!

The lock I am using is a good showcase style lock, as described sstorkel. Got it from home depot, seems sturdy enough!

It might depend on which size cage you buy. I have some of their smaller cages and the glass for those looks like normal plate glass to me...
