Budgett's frog died???

tuwhada Feb 19, 2004 12:26 PM

I have had my budgett's frog for about a month or so now and when I first got him he was eating and doing great. For the past week or so I have noticed that he stopped eating but he really didn't look skinny to me. Well unfortunately this morning I found him dead. I am not quite sure what I did wrong. I read in an earlier post that they are hard to keep, and I would not call myself a beginner frog keeper I would say an intermediate. But I found it VERY difficult to find any caresheets for these guys. Before I consider getting a replacement I was hoping somebody could help me with cage setup, heat, feeding and make sure I did everything right. If not maybe a suggestion of another frog that gets big like that (eventually). I already have a pacman and I do not want a pixie (they grow too quickly). Any advice or ideas.
Thanks
Christina

Everything should be just about the same as pacmans. Temps. Feeding. The only difference is that the budgetts are going to require periodic brumation. About every 3-6 months worked for me. Just brumate for a month or a few weeks or so. If it died just after a month it was either a problem with your set up such as too much urates or feces or some sort of chemical or element in the substrate, or it was just something wrong with the frog. Hard to tell at this point. As for frogs like pyxies growing too quickly, try a dwarf pyxie. They will max out at about 5 inches or so, though I don't believe they grow any slower than a regular pyxie or even a horned frog. These frogs are meant to grow extremely quick to put on weight and size before the rainy season ends. So they will all grow fast as they come from the same sort of habitat(dry and grassy plains). how do you do this brumation. I have never had to do this before. Also I was told that the substrate should be sand, but I found that it was hard for him to bury himself. I also read that they need a setup that is 1/3 water and when I tried this with bed-a-beast it was very muddy. Can you give me more specifics on the setup. My pacman is in a small tank for now (I plan to put him in a split 20 gal shortly) he has bed-a-beast, some moss and small water dish. I was hoping to split a 20 gal and put the budgetts on one side and the pacman on the other. So I am looking for something that will get as big as the pacman but not grow as quickly as the pixie. Any ideas. Please give me more specifics on the setup.
Thank you
Christina
PS if you have a budgetts can you post a picture of your setup, that would probably help alot.

I don't have a pic of any of my set-ups really, but here is a good idea. Get a piece of plexiglass cut to size at a hardware store after measuring the tank. At this point, put it in place and affix it with aquarium sealent at an angle that will allow the frog to easily enter and exit the water. Place large rocks (too large to be swallowed by the frog) on both sides. On the side where the land should be, put bed a beast over the rocks. This will allow for excess moisture to seep down and keep your bed a beast from turning to mud. NEVER use sand as it will impact the frog (which could have been the problem). As for splitting a 20 gallon tank, why not just go buy a sweater box with the ground space equivalent of a 20 gallon tank? Horned frogs, budgetts frogs, and dwarf pyxies, though they could possibly live in a 20 gallon, would appreciate the extra room. All of my frogs move around more and soak more when they have a larger tank that is divided between land and water. It appears to be their set up of choice. Andy

Ok so if I put the gravel down first then the bed-a-beast on top of it I can still do a 1/3 water setup for the budgetts. Could I do a large water dish for him or should be more of a "beach" type setup where it goes from water to land. I am thinking that a larger water dish, with some rocks to help him get out would be easier to keep clean. What do you think.

If it is a bowl, make sure it is a pretty large one that is sunken. Also make sure he can get in and our easily. Budgetts a bit more aquatic than their close relation, the horned frogs, so a larger water area would be particularly useful in this case. Good luck. Andy

Sounds like what you purchased-the budgett may have harboured parasites. Most frequent causes of sudden death from what was apparently health is almost always due to parasites.

These Budgett frogs sound kind of picky to me. I like easy better. I'd stick with a pac man.

Now I do have a bullfrog, and I really enjoy it. Simple as pie to take care of, but you need a HUGE container about 100 gallons size.

There are tons of easy frogs out there. White's treefrogs, for example. tiger leg running frogs are simple too. I found my eyelash frog very very simple to care for, and we "talk" to each other just about every morning (he likes to croak [actually honk] and I croak [well, honk] back and we go back for forth like that for a long time and when I change my croaking tone the frog will also change tones!--absolutely bizzare but very cute!)
