Problem with moss

tuwhada Feb 19, 2004 12:35 PM

Most of my tanks have a good quantity of moss to help with the humidity b/c my house is very dry. I have been finding especially when I change the moss that I get these tiny "fruit flies" or little flying things. Does anybody have any ideas on how to get rid or them or do I not need to worry. Will they harm my frogs??
Thanks
Christina

They are just small gnats that feed off the fungus or mold that grows in damp conditions. You can try to keep the moss a little dryer (I personally don't like moss as a substrate. Bed a beast offers little in the way of hiding spots for crickets or other feeders that could potentially harm the frogs). But the gnats are harmless, and I am sure almost everyone has dealt with them in their tanks at one time or another. Andy

If you do not use moss what are your setups like?

As I posted in reply to your thread below, a plexiglass divider splits the land and water. It works pretty well and the frogs seem to enjoy it.

Moss is just plain nasty. Crickets hide and die in there and those tiny flies lay there maggots on the rotting crickets. It's disgusting.

I use strictly BED-A-BEAST.

To keep humidity up, simply put a shallow bowel of treated water (declorinated, de-ammonia; the conditioner used for aquariums can be used for frogs.) in the terrarium and put a bubble stone in there. My eyelash frog goes nuts when the timer turns on the bubbles! he plays and splashes in the water like a little kid and starts honking. Very very cute. My other frogs are indifferent toward bubble stones. However, regardless whether or not they play in it--this will keep up the humidity quite well.

Or, a simplier solution is keep the bed a beast SLIGHTLY moist at all times.

What is this, Bed-A-Beast? I've never heard of it before. I use moss with my Tomato Frog, and I've also had those little gnats visit, and I agree that the crickets hide in there but they haven't died in there yet. They mostly get into the water dish and can't get out, then die there... Very yucky.

I am trying to find out care instructions for an eyelash frog. Any information would be appreciated.

Forgot to add, you have a Rainbow Burrowing frog? That is so cute~! I love that frog species, they're so adorable. Are they hard to take care of? I wouldn't mind looking into getting one if I can find one.

There is actually a slight debate on whether it is a rainbow burrowing frog. I plan to post a picture to see what people think. But when I purchased the pair (unfortunately one passed away). They refered to them as ornate hoppers but it is not a pacman frog when I did some searches online it looks most like the rainbow burrowing frog. however when I went to my local reptile store he said that the last one he got in the guy was quoting him a price of $400, I only paid like $35 for him. But regardless he looks like the rainbow burrowing and he is cute as hell. It is soo cool to watch him eat. He is pretty easy. Good thick layer of bed-a-beast or jungle mix soil, a hiding place, temps around 75-80 make him pretty happy humidity at around 70% and about 6 small crickets every other day. I am actually trying to find him a friend too if you find a place.

Yes, I want to see that picture when you post it. =D $400? Man, that's an expensive frog! And I thought $60 for a frog was expensive. =P Guess I should save my money if I want one, heh. Let me know when you post the picture. =)
