My boa will not eat!

Zazanak Jun 09, 2003 12:00 PM

I have a baby colombian that will not eat after he shed. He was eating just fine up untill then. I skipped his feed after the shed, then offered the next week with no luck, then the next with no luck. Today i tried again, no luck, I've used live and dead. This time after all failed, i killed it and left it in the cage with the snake hoping for the best. Any ideas?

My boas seem to like very warm, fresh out of the hot water prey for some reason. I know they do not have heat pits but they seem to respond better to warm prey. Also a little blood doesnt hurt. For stubborn snakes I will make a small cut on the snout of the dead prey to expose some blood, or in more extreme conditions brain. Usually works. If none of that works just give it a week or so and try some different things like putting the food in the hider and leaving it alone for a while etc. Also if you snake is in a big enclosure you may consider putting it in something a little smaller for now. I rarely have any problems feeding boas when they are young and I keep mine in a rack. They feel nice, secure, and confident enough to eat like boars.

All good, sound advice. Also make sure the cage is warm enough. A few degrees cooler than they like it will deter a baby boa from eating. Just make sure it doesn't get too hot though. That could also deter them.

Good Luck, Bud...
My Dumeril won't eat either - and hasn't since March - I've tried live/Dead, Frozen/thawed, pinkies, hoppers, you name it....Nothing!!! Spending alot of money on gasoline driving to pet stores for live prey. I'm tuckered out from it all. Now I'm ready to SWAP him for one that does EAT.
