Cheapest way to do it? Make your own medium. I've been comparing a few home made recipes, here is the cheapest:

Add to a 24 or 32oz. container:
1/2 Cup warm water
1 Tablespoon of white sugar
2 Tablespoons of powdered milk
4 Tablespoons of instant mashed potatos

Sometimes you need to add more instant mashed potatos. After combining those ingredients sprinkle a little bakers yeast on top. This medium produces more than any commercial medium I've used, only problem I've had is that it occasionally will mold. Good luck,

powdered milk? Hm I haven't heard of using that, if its good mabye I'll add a bit to my mix that seems to be working well.
Mine as of now is, you need to add half a cup of dry to half and half a cup of the liquid so I just make accordingly. If I have to make 4 cultures I need 2 cups of media so I go
1 and a third cups of potatoe flakes
2/3 of a cup of oat bran
then I dont' really measure but I large spoonful of powdered sugar
1 spoonful of bakers yeast
then some protein and calcium supplements
some ground up beeswax
then half and half water of vinegar and water.
