PLEASE, someone respond????? I need to know about Red leg

frog429 Feb 19, 2004 04:24 PM

Hi there,

Does anyone have a photo of a frog with Red Leg? I have a whites tree frog (Cartman) and so many "frog sites" have conflicting information, I just want to make sure he is okay.

The underside of his back legs is a pinkish/red color and seem to be redder than when I brought him home. They have always been that way, but his legs are so skinny, and his belly is so...well, round and full (not really fat, just really big in porportion to his legs). You can see pictures of him on my website http://www.geocities.com/frog429/Frog_page.html

I am not concerned about his brown/green color changes..he's pretty consistent. However, he seems to have a problem catching crickets. He's in a 20 gallon tank and I have 2 plastic (eco-terra) plants in there and 1 log. he usually catches the first cricket no problem..but sometimes the 2nd one just moves around..and he keeps "trying" to jump at it, but misses it. He also gets mouthfuls of his "bed-a-beast", is this okay?

His tank temp is a constant 70 at night - 78-80 during the day..and his humidity fluctuates from 55% to 70%.

I clean his water every day (Spring water) and pick up his little droppings and clean out his terrarrium every 2 weeks (using antibacterial stuff for amphibian cages and rinsing it and all his "furniture" out several times and letting it dry before he goes back in).

I gut load his crickets (and it seems that since I've been feeding them "gut loader" more of them die quickly) and I dust w/ calcium every week...

He hangs out inside his little log (actually, I'm not sure how he makes it in and out of the log..the hole is 1/2 his size! but he does) and has been coming out later and later each evening... I just have so many questions..and the one's I think are really important don't get answered on this site.... Can someone please respond??

Thanks,

Jess

I do not have a pic of redleg, but from what you describe about your frog, he sounds normal to me. I have two whites and both have quite pink/red undersides of their back legs. That is good that his belly is round as long as it doesn't look distended. And is he catching the crickets eventually? One of my frogs is a voracious hunter and catches all her crickets right away, but my male has a harder time with it and is a little clumsy. If he isn't catching them, you might try breaking off the crickets back legs so they can't hop away but have to crawl instead. As long as your frog seems strong, and is eating, pooping, and all that, i would say he's probably fine, but I can't say for sure since I am not a vet. The mouthfuls of bedabeast I don't think will be a problem, though I have heard from some that it may block their digestive system. Probalby though, if you watch closely, he is spitting out most of the bedding. That is my experience at least. It sounds like your setup is fine..make sure there are places to hide. I don't know the reason for him coiming out later each night, so i can't answer that one, sorry. Well I hope this helps a little, take care.
