A question or two about mice....

roachey56 Feb 19, 2004 04:48 PM

I have a 1.1 "group" of feeder mice for my snake in a 10 gallon. I did not purposely buy a 1.1 . I have had them since monday, what is the chance that will have bred by tomorrow night? They were raised together and are most likely siblings. If they bred by tomorrow how long will it take for the mother to give birth? how many babies will be made?

Average gestation time is 21 days..

If they are adults she may already be pregnant...

Mice have no problems with incest either

how do you know when they are adults?
the male is definitely sexually mature, and the female is about the same size, does that mean they are adult?
i don't have a scale so i need length, width in inches.

I thought mice or rats when raised together from babies to adults don't breed as well, or maybe it was from one of those fancy rat breeders rat breeding guide.

Size is a hard way to tell if a mouse is an adult, as their sizes vary quite a lot. Even if you see the testicles of the male, that does not mean that they are/have been breeding. I bought 1.2 mice way back when I started raising mice, would have sworn they were adult, and it was 6 weeks before I had a litter, so it was 3 weeks before they ever even started to procreate.

Typically, males drop their testicles between 3-4 weeks of age but some are slower. Female mice are sexually mature around 4-5 weeks of age but it is better to wait till they are 6 weeks or so before breeding them, this gives them more time to grow bigger themselves. An adult mouse is approximately 4" long, minus tail.

if they are sexually mature and she isn't pregnant yet, she will be in a couple of days. !st time mothers of mine have 4-6 babies. More mature mothers have 8-10.

It is very hard to tell, supposedly you can tell if they just had sex if there is a plug but I don't know how to do that...

Usually you just wait a couple weeks and she will get huge fast
