ss Feb 19, 2004 05:50 PM

what is the best way to seperate pups from the plant. I have a cryptanthus "black knight" and it is going like crazy. should i pull some of the pups off or just let it all happen? also the vriesea is sending out a pup. i am not sure what i should do.

Never remove a pup before it is at least 1/2 the size of the mother plant. personally, with Vrieseas and Cryptanthus pups, I have let the pups nearly reach adult size before separating them. By that point, it is obvious where the division between the two plants is, and they can be cut apart using a serrated knife. Even if one has fewer roots than the other, there usually is no problem in promoting root growth if the base is set in a moist media.
