Bulb or no Bulb?

Nei_Kai Feb 19, 2004 07:46 PM

Does the cage and snake really need a bulb? I plan on just getting an undertank heater for my 20 gal. I might get bulb just so I can see him better, but do I even need that? because I have a big sliding glass door which puts in a lot of light and my overhead light...so I was wondering if I even needed one for seeing it better.

It is not needed. You can use one for viewing purposes but it is not needed for your snake's health. They tend to be more nocturnal anyway.

Depending on the ambient room temperature and the thickness of your substrate layer, you might need a bulb. Remember that your substrate is going to insulate the UTH and you can't have the UTH running too hot or you risk burning the snake. Besides, a bulb provides your snake with a day/night cycle and day/night temp fluctuations... at least simulating Mother Nature a bit.

I have incandescent lights on my tanks. It helps with the heating and makes them more appealing to look at. Mine are on timers so they get a natural day/night cycle.
