Ball Python Enclosure

crotalusatrox Feb 19, 2004 07:55 PM

I want to try something new with one of my yearling ball pythons and make a "living" environment for her. I have her in a 30 gallon breeder tank now which I want to keep her in but re-do the inside. I have never tried to put live plants in any of my tanks but I saw an article about living vivariums in one of my old issues of REPTILES magazine and I became interested because they looked really cool and they seem relativly easy to maintain once it is started up. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have no clue about what I am doing so please explain carefully. Thanks

a "living vivarium" is not very good for a BP. Unless you have a VERY sturdy plant, the bp will just wreck it.
The urate will soak into the dirt and eventually the dirt will become filthy with bacteria. So unless you have LOTS of time to keep it clean. Then you will have a hard time keeping up with it. You have to find out what plants are safe, then you have to CARE FOR THE PLANTS as well, they have to have proper humidity, and lighting. So that means possibly investing in a UVB light.
The best thing for a "natural" looking cage is the fake plastic plants. Your bp will eventually outgrow your 30 gal tank, and will need the MIN. of a 40 gal breeder tank.
