Catching food in flight?

football9755 Feb 19, 2004 08:40 PM

Can corns catch birds in flight? And has anyone here seen it? I have heard that they can. It sounds like a good test for me to do.

Can't say that they do.I'm sure they can.I had a florida king some years ago that would catch the thawed mice before they hit the cage floor.

Don't underestimate the ability of a bird to hurt your snake, though. Be careful!

I trained my amel to catch a frisbee.

Now that was uncalled for....but, in all honesty, I had a similar thought..I just wasn't going to come out and say it.

Im just hoping he stays away from birds of prey.

I'm rooting for staying away from anything with a pulse....oh, and also the frisbee thing.

I think that was meant completely as humor. As for corns catching birds, can't say I have seen it done nor do I recommend releasing live birds in a corn's tank. (much more risk the bird would fly out of the cage before the snake can catch it). There are some snakes out there that can do this, Seem to remember seeing a show about some sort of snake snatching bats out of the air.

Texas ratsnakes can catch bats out of the air, which makes me think that a corn could do it if so inclined.

My corns catch mice before they hit the floor sometimes. So do my ratsnakes. And last night my Children's Python boy caught the mouse I dropped in. He looked silly though. He had it mid tail and couldn't figure out what to do with it. He tried to toss and catch it and just slung it into his own head. Then I gently guided him to the cage floor to figure it out, before he whacked himself unconscious.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.

yes, corns can catch flying prey. but i think they might need to expect it first. corns have been known to hang out in mine shafts and snag passing bats. i would think it would have to learn to associate the bat smell with being ready to catch one in mid air, but maybe not. i wouldnt reccomend trying it.it could be cool, but it could be disasterous too.
