Why would a gecko NOT grow??

thegeckobarn Feb 19, 2004 09:31 PM

What would be some reasons for this?? Heat, calcium, housed with others???

I sold 2 geckos last year to a friend, and just got a call tonight saying that the female hasnt grown. He said he feeds crickets, and uses a heat pad...but they are housed together. And he said he uses Rep Cal w/vit. D3 phosphorus free. So what could it be?? I didnt ask if he gutloads his crickets..but I dont if that could be the case since the other is growing. I did suggest a fecal, and if nothing works, thats what he'll do.
He ALSO said that she is not using her back legs very well..which made me think MBD and lack of calcium,..but he said he dusts the crickets (I didnt think to ask how much). But he is bringing her over this weekend to take a look at her, and see if she needs a vet (more than likely)

Any thoughts?? Im not sure what his temps are, I will ask him when the come by.

it could be because the fact they are being kept together, possible parasite load crom his feeders (pinworms) and it does sounds like MBD on the back legs however mbd affects all the limbs.. maybe she got injured??? i would take the animal to a vet and get a fecal and exam done... in the mean time have him seperate that animal by itself... tell him to watch closely to see if its eating habits pick up any. good luck and let us know what may come of this

I also had someone state that it may be genetic..any thought about that?
I dont have his mother anymore, but she was pretty normal sized with no problems.

Cryss thats another consideration you have to take into account. Not to mention the unscrupulous breeders who breed whatever they can to try and make a buck. Genetics plays a key role in leo size. I have a fully grown female thats just beautiful, but she is only like 45 grams. She is a pastel with nice lavender. I am breeding her to a large male I have because of the size issue. The leopards in question should have fecals done, but it may just be a genetic issue. Also make sure you check every aspect of the husbandry involved.

Yeah, well luckily he hasnt paid me for her, so im not liable.
I wont charge him for her, and I even offered to trade her for a male, but he says he is happy with her.
But I will advise a fecal and checkup.
He also asked approx. how much that would cost, but I am unsure. Anyone know?
Luckily ive never had to do it so far, so I wouldnt know.

The other female I bought with her has long since doubled her size but I swear this little girl is still pretty much the same size she was when I got them both. I see her eat...not very much but I do see her. I just don't understand why she's not growing.

But my girl doesn't have the leg problems you described.
