New Red Tegus

LizardMom Feb 19, 2004 10:08 PM

First off, thanks to everyone on the forum for sharing info and pics. I got most of my questions answered just reading.

Just got two young red tegus on Sunday. Couldn't decide which one I wanted, so my wonderful husband (and soon to be large-cage-maker) bought both of them. They're little yet; about 8". Both of them explored the enclosure for a few minutes and burrowed out of sight, and I haven't seen either of them since. They have been handled since birth and both were perfectly willing to chill in my hands. Now if I can just be patient until they decide to come out and play. Now I understand just how boidsntegus felt!! I want them to come out and play! Once they come out, I'll try to get pictures of my new babies.

Yeah, so you feel my pain, huh! My little buddy just woke up last weekend. He may have been awake earlier, but I didn't see him until last week. Two days later he was eating though. Not too much, about 5-6 bites. I guess he will need to recondition his stomach to food again. Then I expect him to become the little piggy like everyone says they are! He still doesn't trust me yet though. When I first got him, he was as gentle as you say yours are, but now he is a little jumpy, I guess because he is fully conscious now. He tail whipped me yesterday! I think I just scared him. Anyway, good luck with your new babies and I expect you will see them soon. You might want to think about going ahead and heating the cage during the day if you are not already doing so. They may be coming out for an hour or two a day while you are not there. Good luck!

I've got some heat in the cage now, but plan to increase it a bit this weekend. I didn't want to get it too hot all at once, since they were kept cool before I brought them home. I'm also in close contact with the breeder, and he says it is not unusual for them to hide for a week or so after being moved.

I feel almost as excited and as scared of doing something wrong as I did 20-some years ago when my first child was born. Silly, huh? Anyway, thanks for the encouragement.
