Another dehmidifier/mildew question...

athos_76 Feb 19, 2004 10:13 PM

Ok, so I found a 40 pt dehumdifier for about $160, and I had a thought. If i put this in the snake room to combat mildew, won't it suck the water and humidity out of the cages? Especially the turtle tanks? And that would mean more refills of water bowls and turtle tank refills.

Opinions?

Unless you have highly ventilated snake cages I don't think you'll see an increase in the frequency with which you change water bowls. You certainly won't with the turtle pools if they have any significant amount of water.

I don't know how many turtle pools you have in your room or how much water they hold, but the dehumidfier you purchased may not even be able to keep up.

You may need to come up with a plan to turn the air over in your room. If you rely a lot on ambient temperatures this can be a problem as you'll be sucking the heat out of the room.

If you tried to come up with a recycling system to remove the mildew that would be very difficult. Mildew spores I believe are resistant to UV and are too small to pass through mechanical filters. But I really don't know the details of that so don't take my word for it. That's why I've neglected so far to respond to your posts about this.
