unexplained death.....

dmac77 Feb 19, 2004 10:30 PM

My ball python died recently and I was wondering if anyone on here could offer some insight to why... I kept him for almost two years, and had no problems at all. He fed regularly every 7 to 14 days on a fairly predictable schedule, and never once refused a meal. Shed every 4 to 5 weeks like clockwork. I offered him a mouse last week as per his scheduled feeding on Wednesday, and he refused it. This was odd as he had never done this before, but I had heard of others having balls be picky eaters, so I wasn't too concerned. I offered another (different) mouse again on Saturday and he refused to eat again. I went to work, and when I came home he was dead. I can't figure it out, and don't have the cash to send him to a vet for a post mortum. Was very disappointed, though. He was a great snake and very very tame. If anyone has any thoughts, please let me know. Thanks a bunch.

David Mac.

A friend of mine suffered the same thing with one of her yearlins I think, altho he did go off feed three months prior to this. It was suggested that he might possibly have had an internal defect such as a week heart, or something genetically wrong with him but in either case there would have been no way of knowing prior to his death. If you can rule out enviornmental or disease causes, then it might be something similar that has heppened to your snake. My condolances to you, it's tough to lose them.
