question for actual tortoise keepers

tribbielvr Feb 19, 2004 11:55 PM

Is Mazuri the brand most recommended when supplementing a tortoise diet? My DIL is the manager of our local pet store and I can get any brand available. I just don't feel like I can offer mine a balanced diet this winter, with all our "weeds" being frozen and having to rely on grocery produce. OF course I also keep hay available but they really have not shown much interest in it.

I didn't hibernate them as they were just imported this year, and I thought it best to let them acclimate before doing it.

I did find it interesting, one evening I had them running around my office and one of them found a lab rat block on the floor and attempted to eat IT! I didn't let her but I was shocked that she even found it interesting enough to WANT to taste! ROFL

Thanks
Nina

have used "the missing link" product for my dogs and cats for years- great results. have been using it as a supplement on my torts food at every feeding for years, also. their enclosure is about 1200 sq ft and most of their food is natural.they are kept outside year round and have never had any health problems. i supplement with fresh veggies and missing link. your local feed or pet store should carry this product. check web site; www.designinghealth.com tele# 1-800-774-7387 a california co so use PST office hours.

We used to use Missing Link when we showed dogs, I had not really thought about using it for our reptiles. I will definately look into that.
Thanks

Mazuri is most recommended by those who use prepackaged diets because it has been around for a while.
In case you haven't read any of the previous posts on the subject, I like using it for all my tortoises although I do not use it exclusively.
If you try and determine what your tortoise needs as far as nutrition it will drive you nuts. That is why so many people recommend as varied a diet as possible. I'm convinced that nobody really knows what these animals need and I think there is no way you can know what is required. I approach it like most folks do and that is by trial and error. This has been a life long process for me and I've found something that is giving me the development in my animals that I'm happy with. Even if you feed Mazuri exclusively, I'd suggest limiting it to once or twice a week. If you can afford it and don't have many charges... I'd also suggest Walkabout Farms products.
No matter what you use try and mix it up as much as you possibly can.

Thanks for the advice. The reason I was concerned is because this time of the year we simply can't get the variety....I sure can't wait until summer! I think we'll just supplement with the commercial until our weeds start growing again.

Looks like we'll order Mazuri.
Thanks again
Nina
