Feeding and Misc Questions for Cresties

mildapathy Feb 20, 2004 09:12 AM

Hey all,

After keeping a few snakes, and leapord/fat geckos over the years a friend of mine convinced me to try out Cresties. Really like the little guys but I have some concerns I was hoping to get help with.
The cage that I have is a 15x15x36 with mesh sides, top and front. I have a pothos suspended in the center with fake leaves covering the wires that suspend it and a branch covered with moss and some more fake leaves on the floor of the cage. I am using the fake green carpets, along with bunches ofmoss at the bottom. Took me a little while to get the temps balanced out, but I seem to be hovering in the 70ish range right at the plant (using a 100 watt spot, coupled with a 50 watt red) Seems like I'm loosing a great deal of heat through the mess and my room temp is a little ont he cool side (60ish when I'm not there, 70ish when I am). Is this suitable?
My next concern is that my pair doesn't seem to be eating... The male is about 4in SVL and the female a bit smaller. I've had them for a little less then a week, and I believe they have taken a few crix, but none of the waxworm worms, and as far as i can tell none of the baby food. I offer both Bananna and Peach flavored mixed with the T rex supplement and some water to make it a little more fluid like. I have not seen them take any of this stuff at all, and I'm getting a little concerned because the female is starting to look a little thin . The petri dishes I feed them from is situated below the Pothos towards the back of the cage and the Wax worms on the other side in a larger petri dish.
So does anyone have any reccomendations or advice to offer a new Crestie keeper?

It sounds like you are doing things alright. We hand feed our cresties every night so that we know which one is eating etc. I mix baby food fruit (2 parts), to (1 part) crested gecko food and I also add a little calcium. I use a spoon and feed them individually. Some nights they eat more than other nights but I definitely get to know them and they are really tame. I also give them crickets about every third night. I don't know if this is the right way, but it works for me and they are very healthy looking!

I tried doing that from my finger tips but the Crested won;t sit still long enough...Here's another quick question...Is there such thing as to much greenery? My cage is almost completely filled with fake and live plants...the geckos seem to enjoy it, and the Crickets hang out at the top of the cage where they can be easily spotted.
