Feeding mixture

Singular Feb 20, 2004 11:07 AM

My Sav has either grown tired of mice or likes turkey better. I remember reading that someone mixed eggs, ground lean turkey, and dried insects with powder into little balls for freezing. I would like the "recipe" I guess, for this. Should I cook the eggs or leave them raw and meed them into the turkey? My Sav loves eggs more than anything so I would like to scramble them and cook them before freezing, but I'm not sure it's possible.

Thanks

Here is the recipie found in Robert Faust's book:

10 lbs gound turkey
steamed bone meal
Centrum multivitmins
1/2 dozen eggs

Brown the ground turkey, add the eggs to the mix and cook those too. Then you can take the mixture and add two crushed Centrum multivitamins and 90 grams of bone meal. Roll the mixture into bite size balls and freeze.

He says that you can use this for up to 50% of their entire diet. Some zoos have used this almost entirely but he doesn't reccomend it.

You have to be careful with unfertile eggs though... They can cause a Vitamin E deficiency.. Hence why my Sav only gets eggs once a month and then its only one egg and he gets the rest of his food for that day as well. She loves the eggs but I refuse to endanger her health in the least... And I can't get ahold of Balut... (embryonated eggs)

Only once a month? Dok gets eggs almost weekly. She eat's about 6 to 8 mice a week and she gets eggs whenever I eat them which is at the very least once a week. I imagine she eats about 1 1/12 eggs per sitting. She never really refuses eggs, but she will refuse mice. I don't want to harm her either so should I cut back and give up on the turkey/egg balls?

I would cut back on them myself...there's something in the eggs that causes Vitamin E to not be absorbed like it should.. I can't remember what the chemical is called though. You could probably go 2 or 3 times a month but my Sav only picks at eggs anyway.. she'd rather have her gerbils and rats... or chicken wings (raw and with bone) than eggs. I'd give up on the turkey deal and stick to whole prey animals... Or what I do... I have an almost adult Sav.. she's about a year old and right around 30 inches now. She still gets fed 3 times a week.. but during her growth period I was feeding her 3-5 appropriate whole prey items (Like mice or rats etc) per week and the 2 days she didn't get rats or mice.. she got chicken wings with bone dusted with a vitamin powder. Now she gets fed twice a week with rats or mice and once a week with the chicken and vitamin powder. I'm no expert.. this is my first Monitor and first Sav but she's a healthy little devil on this diet... *l* And I do mean little devil wholeheartedly.
