Tinted Snake Cages....Good Idea Or Bad One

Zazanak Feb 20, 2004 11:45 AM

I have 3 very large cages, about to house 3 large snakes. Does anyone think it would make them feel a bit more secure if I tinted the windows? Just an idea. Not sure if it would hurt or not, I want them to be tame and used to people. The retic and anaconda are the main two I worry about that with. The B.C.I. wont be a problem either way. Just curious, might add some style to the cages aswell as keeping people that come into the room from freaking out as bad. Also, Im not sure the effect on heating this might have, although as I understand it, car window tint actually makes it cooler on the inside due to blocking the sun rays, but since its in a room, I doubt it would have any effect on heating really. Any thoughts on the subject welcome. Thanks!

Go for it, if you think it will help the snakes be more comfortable. Tinting won't affect the heat in the cage.

My experience has been that the snakes that i have in display cages that can see me move around the room become used to seeing me and are very tame. There are indiviual exceptions. I am generalizing. The snakes that I have that are in racks or containers where they can't see me are often more flighty when handled. The seclusion of tinted glass may make the snakes more secure, but it may not help make them more tame for handling. Just my thoughts and experience with my snakes. Good luck.Rin

But that's mostly in theory and would depend on several factors. All in all the effect would be negligable.

The only way it would make your cage cooler is if you heated your cages by radiating heat onto the glass panels to heat the cage. I'm guessing you don't do that.

I think the tinted windows would be beneficial. Although if the snakes are flighty in the first place when handled I do not know if the addition of view reducing tint would help you. As someone said already the animals kept in racks with smaller/reduced viewing area were more flighty, and I do not think a large retic/anaconda/burm/Insert large boid) would be the best idea.

Good luck with it.

Common window tint becomes completely transparant when viewed in the ir and uv spectrums. If you don't believe me, do a search on UV passing filters. Don't snakes see in these wavelengths? It might make nervouse people more comfortable but I don't think it would have an affect on your snakes one way or the other.
