Stomatitis(Mouth Rot)???

yetimama Feb 20, 2004 04:51 PM

I have lost 2 chameleons(jacksons)to a similar ailment and after doing some research have come to believe that it is Stomatitis(i think). The first sign is a sore on the bottom lip of the cham and a pussy white sore in the corner of the mouth and eventually that side of the jaw swelling up with the cham being listless and wobbly when moving. If I am wrong in this diagnosis please correct me and give me some advise to what is causing this and how to prevent it in my future chams.
thank you.

Jax are highly susceptible to infections of the temporal gland in the corner of the mouth. They need to be inspected regularly to prevent the infections from because severe and catastrophic. At this point your chams need veterinary attention and they need it immediately. TYhere is NO alternative. Ed

Thank you for your reply ED. My remaining Jax do not show any signs of this and I check them frequently. Is there anything I can do to prevent them from getting this infection????

I do a regular foot & mouth inspection at least weekly. If there's any evidence of any kind of debris or "crud" in the corners of the mouth I remove it by very gently scraping it off with a toothpick. If it looks like there's anything problematic I then aply a tiny amount of 10% Betadyne or 10% Chlorhexadrine as an antiseptic.
