dragon55 Feb 20, 2004 05:29 PM

hey,

Can mali uromastyxs be handled? A lot of people just say it depends on the individual, but in general how are they with handleing?

well, they are handlable...but some individuals require further taming.

some uromastix care providers prefer not to handle them very much...

but the juveniles are definately harder to hold than the adults. they are full of energy and they won't stop running!!!! But as adults they are quite easy to hold.

mine is less stressed when i don't hold him but once a week at most...the rest of the time he just sits in there either in his burrows or out baskin and is perfectly content. just my thoughts.

Mine is kinda squirmy when handled. He will sit there for a second then start 'swimming'. He's about 6" so far, so I guess he's got that young-Uro thing going on.

watch if its gettin too stressed. if it is...just reduce the number of times you handle him in 1 week. hope this helped

Here are some pluses and minuses for handling:

Minuses:
Wild caught uros
Uros that are very hot and active (i.e., middle of the day)
Uros without somewhere close by to hide
Uros that haven't defecated yet today (maybe they'll do it on you if they get scared)

Pluses:
Uros that are handled every day
Hand fed uros
Uros that learn to associate you with warmth (in the winter)
Tired uros that just wanna curl up in your lap and fall asleep
