Under Attack!! Ruuuun!!

FisherCham20 Feb 20, 2004 05:55 PM

While doing some house work today I spotted a small bug climbing up the drapes. I rushed to grab it (free chameleon food!) and then I noticed it was a very very tiny praying mantis! I rushed to the tank where the egg cases were in and it was swarming with babies! They can climb right up glass, no problems. I had a fine mesh screen on it but it wasn't fine enough. Probably about 20 of them got out. About another 100 were in the tank. They're fast and can jump pretty far. I can't wait till they get bigger so I can feed them to my cham!

ha-ha! I remember the first time I saw a "swarm" of baby PM's. it was in my garden not my house, on a lavender plant, but it was one of those: "oh look, a baby praying mantis. Oh look another, oh, and there's another...holy S**T there are hundreds!"

Enjoy!

Just remember that these guys are extremely cannibalistic. And they require lots of pinheads & fruit flies. Let us know how many survive and grow.

Yes. I have 4 fruit fly cultures going at the moment. My crickets have been breeding like crazy so I have a large amount of pinheads on hand. The mantis are very fun to watch. I've seen about 10 of them "battle" a fruit fly. lol They're not even 1cm big, so the flies are a big meal. They're in a 30 gallon tank at the moment. Well planted, sand bottom, lots of twigs and such for them to perch on.
