Update on yearling Redfoot's RI

Passport Feb 20, 2004 06:54 PM

My little Refoot, Rufus, spent the last 13 days being nebulized at the vet. I brought him home today and the vet said that there was no sign of bubbles or any other fluids. They also treated him orally with Furizite Solution. He gained 5 grams during his stay there. I am pleased to say the least. The cost was $200 and I was expecting a bigger charge than that. I'm wondering, though, if they left water with him during his stay. When I returned him to his tub and gave him fresh water I though he would drink it all. He was really thirsty. I noticed that the vet didn't pronounce him "well" but instead said to keep him warm for the next two weeks. Of course. Anyway, I really thought I had lost him and now I have him back again. I am thankful.

Good news! I think he'll get better and grow into a nice
big brat. I'll be he was thirsty, that's good that he was
drinking. Give him a little kiss for me, good luck! niki

I have kissed Teddy on top of his head, it's kinda like what
I imagine kissing the bottom of a tennis shoe would be like.

I brought my sulcata "cash" appropriate for all the $$ we have put into him! (found out he is a she will have to change name)in to the vet thinking he was acting funny turns out he has had hook worm for about a year (he is 1) we never got him tested when we bought him . any way vet did x rays due to cash's breathing heavy (they were clear) but between 2 x rays and 4 treatments of worming meds we have a grand total of $400 not to mention the vet visits last winter totaling 300!! very expensive turtle but well worth it he's my baby !!!!!!! vet says hookworm isnt tranmisible to humans i have always been told it is,, this is very important as i have 4 children and one on the way i am 2 mo pg , does anyone know if hookworm is turtle to ppl transmisable?(we are very careful to wash out hands after handing her/him but still nervous ), thanks!

People can get hookworm, I know that, but I think it's unlikely that you would get it if you practice good hygiene. My tortoise also had hookworm, and it is a bear to get rid of--took 3 treatments, but he is finally clear of it. Keep your tortoise's enclosure as clean as you can, because otherwise he can reinfect himself. I used newspaper as a substrate, changed it every day, and disinfected everything every 2 or 3 days. If your sulcata eats his poop, then you'll have to be extra vigilant--luckily, mine didn't, but I've heard that sulcatas do, sometimes.

Good luck!

i didnt think about the eating poop thing yes she has in the past but hasnt latly so im hoping she is over doing it ,we are careful to wash all the time ,i use hay as a substrate her encosure is huge id use a whole roll of towels a day! but i guess its better than havin to pay to have her treated again2 bucks verses 200 better idea

You're probably OK if you make sure to get out all the poop, and change the substrate out more often than usual. It does get frustrating when you go through a treatment, and then find out you have to do another one!
