Those using shelfliner

clickman Feb 20, 2004 07:19 PM

To those using shelfliner:

Do you have a problem with lots of liquid? I use silkworms (Very high water content) as my staple, so when my beardie poops, I get TONS of water. Does anyone else have a very well hydrated beardie and use shelfliner? I'd imagine it'd be a pain to clean with that, so I haven't tried it with my dragon.

I haven't had a problem with it. Silkies are my staple too and the liquid just kind of beads up on the liner and you wipe it up with the rest of the stuff. Now, I just changed Fuego's cage to liner and it may be another story when he hangs his butt off the branch and lets it fly, but we will see.

Yeah some of mine leave some liquid that if not cleaned up fast enough, and they decide to run through it can be a real mess. I keep extra sets just for this type of thing which I suggest people do. If one needs a big cleaning you can soak it, clean it, hang to dry and put a fresh one in. If you know yours has runny stools often, and you are not coming home for extended periods paper towels on top could help cut down some of the mess you would have when you came home to feed, spot clean etc. Shelf liner is not for everyone, especially those who are away from home for extended periods where the dragon has the time to make such messes, or those who want extravagant cages with lots of funiture=things to clean if you plan to clean daily, and with choosing shelf liner you choose to clean daily to keep really clean cages. I've found in my situation with feeding 3 x a day, multiply cages a lot of time is devoted to the dragons daily anyway. 3 times a day if not more I'm looking in the cages and catch most of the poop before they get a chance to do the damage. It's not for everyone, but if you can make it work there is not much easier, safer, and cleaner for your dragons.

I highly agree with Mattman's suggestion about having a set of shelf liners instead of just a single one. It makes it a whole lot easier to take the dirty one out, replace with a clean/dry one, then clean/disinfect the removed liner at a some times more convinient time than right then.

I only have one dragon that makes a mess. No matter what he's on. He runs through the poop and smears it all over the floor, glass, himself etc..
Most of mine poop on paper towels, so that makes it easy.
The liquid w/ poop is never a problem for me.
