Check near water! Sorry, I knew everyone out there was thinking it. I'm not from Florida, but the basic general rule is this,"If you want to find a watersnake...look for water." It's always worked for me. I'm in NC and considering that there is a more diverse population of watersnake species down there, I would say it shouldn't be too hard. Just my penny-penny...(sorry about being a smarty to start off)lol

As said, any permanent (or semi-permanent) body of water will normally hold Nerodia if you are in the right area. Look for areas with good vegetation around the banks, lots of things to flip, a good population of frogs/tadpoles/minnows, and you should be well on your way. Especially in the south. I can't think of a ditch now that I havn't found a water snake in when I have been looking for them. A normal day walking down any random ditch can yield up to 30 water snakes.

Is after early spring rains and temporary pools fill up. These quickly become breeding ground for tons of toads and frogs...which means...watersnakes! I've had a lot of luck just after dark when the toads are collecting around the pools edges with a flashlight. I've got a puddle that might have a diameter of 5ft. along some tall grass in my back yard that ALWAYS has a couple of N.erythrogaster in it in the spring. Just my penny-penny!

I would have to say the most fun I had herping was mid summer during baby leopard frog season. We caught (had in hand) over 38 cottonmouths, not to mention numerous waters/ribbons and other snakes. It was beautiful. Can't wait for anuran breeding season!

You southerners have just got it to easy.
Here, in Perth County, southern Ontario, I have to drive an hour or two to even try to find nerodia. Only one historical record in my area.
No records for T. Sauritis in the area.

Ouch...Now that really stings. Most people hate them as they are so common. I guess you are one of the few and proud that will not get burned out on them at least haha.

Sorry, to hear it. I get bitten by so many watersnakes each year, it has just became part of nature to me. Not to mention I make trips to Iowa each year so that I can do some better fresh water fishing and see some gorgeous N.sipeodons. If you want to see some of the locals from NC, go to my website and check out the field herping photos section, not to mention one of my most nasty bites! lol

...varieties, yeah check just about any fresh water source near the banks. BUT if you wanna see the BEST (IMO) you gotta get into the mangroves a bit! lol!

I have a feeling you are biased! cough cough. Well, I would be too. I love seeing clarkii. Scott Wahlberg and I found one this past summer and I am dying to see another.
