"Training"

ByRandom Feb 20, 2004 08:31 PM

. . . . We think that we can train these guys to be less skittish around us. Or, get them used to us handling them. But little do we know that they are the ones doing the training.

. . . . All of my geckos tell me when it's time for dinner. They all get out of their various hides, and sit on top of their humid hides and look out at me until I notice them. And once I notice one, I notice the rest justlooking at me. And whenever I put a cricket or mealworm into the tank nearest one of my males (Jaws, lol) he always tries to go through the glass of the ten gallon tanks to get at it. Odd.

Lol, anyhow. Thought it was funny.

I cant get my three to eat half the time. And the only way they eat is for me to toss a mealworm in their hide and hope they see it, which is about 50% of the ones i toss in. Of the 50% that get seen, i'd say about 15% get eaten. Then i have to clear all the uneaten mealworms out every night. Its very tedious and frustrating. I have 2 dishes with 10 mealworms each. About one comes up missing every two days. Probably just found a way to escape the dish. This is the 8th month. I'd hoped they would've realised the source of the food by now.

Maybe you've given them too many hides so they don't "see" you feeding them everyday. They have the attention span of a gnat so if they don't see you every day, they might forget. LOL!

Yeah, one of my favorite leos loves look at me. Whenever i walk into the room, she darts out of her cage and stares at me to give her food. But when i go to pick her up, she runs away. Its kinda funny after awhile. Shes a very curious leo, but prefers not to be held.

I wish my leos did something like that. They are completely inactive. Every once in a while i'll see one out. But they'll go right back in when they see me. When i got my first one, i've had her two months longer than the others, she was inactive. So i bought two more. I thought surely out of three i'd get one that is the way everyone on here describes. But they are all in hides day and night. I'm sure they come out after i go to bed but i have no way of knowing. I try to handle them about once a week for about 5 minutes or so. They are all tame but i have to lift a hide off of them to get them to walk on my hand.

I pull everything out of the tank when I give them crickets. I get the water dish and hides out of the way so the crickets can't hide, toss a few in and then it's a free-for-all. As soon as I start pulling their stuff out of the tank, they must know what's going to happen next because I can see them all getting excited. LOL!
