Feeding Question

ew1074 Feb 20, 2004 09:53 PM

If I were to start puting my leos individually into another container for feeding, would it take them long to find the food? They've been with me for eight months and still have no idea that there is mealworm dishes in their tank. It would be alot easier for me to toss mealworms by them in a smaller container, then i wouldnt have to clean out all the paper towels to get the uneaten mealies out. Would this be a good idea?? Thanks.

I know that most of my leos wont eat when put in a different cage/container. They become too stressed. Try putting the mealworm dish at the entrance of their hide, and they should see them moving and come out to investigate, works for me anyway.

They most likely wont eat if they're put into a container to eat..and doing this daily could stress them..heres what i do

i dust the meales then drop on in one by one..(droping one in after one is eaten)this way no meales escape and cany go under the paper towels
just a suggestion
good luck

I'd suggest against placing your leo in a seperate tank for feeding daily for a couple of the reason previously mentioned. Leopard geckos are solitary prey animals, so constant attention is, unlike with mammalian pets, not a good thing.

I'd suggest that you place the mealworms in a dish that's got a lip just high enough that they can't get out. If your leos get hungry enough they'll find the food, especially if you get healthy and active worms that move around alot. They might only feed at night when you're not looking and the lights are off (they're nocturnal creatures after all..), but they should be able to find the food.

The lip of my mealworm dishes are just above the paper towels. In frustration, about 3 months ago, i raised the level of the middle of the tank. Then i cut holes and stuck the dishes inside the holes. The mealworms still cant escape because the dish is the same depth, but the lip barely clears the paper towels. The second dish is just a little higher. So thats not the problem, my lights are always off. The have a flourescant light to sim daytime. I know that they are nocturnal creatures. The have 12 hours of day and 12 of night. So thats not the problem either. I dont know why they dont eat from the dish. My temps arent the problem because they do eat. Its just a very tedious way that i have to feed them. With all three together, it takes about an hour and a half to make sure that they all get 10 mealworms. I dont have an hour and a half every night.
