Trying to get an idea of how many animals are produced each year. Please contribute......

Brian Oakley Feb 21, 2004 12:44 AM

Ok, talking with a friend, yes we like to brainstorm, we were thinking about how many snakes are produced each year nation wide.
we would like you to tell us (accurate numbers please) how many snakes you produce each year. I will be posting this on other forums so please do not reply to the same post on another forum as we will be keeping track. For this study, we are talking snakes alone, if you breed different types, that is fine to include them all in one post. Not to forget about the amphibain, lizard, torts, etc. people, but just work with us here.
I am sure there are things you would think of to add to this inquiry, but that is something we can do in the future. Just wanted a general number for now on the above question.

While I think that it would be neat to have an approximate number, you will have to exhaust MANY avenues to get a decent number (and even then, it will probably be on the low side). But, for kicks, here's what i produced this past year:

Eastern Indigos: 18 (this is my primary focus of interest in terms of captive breeding)
Ball Pythons: 20
Garters (eastern): 88 (from one birth!)
Green Snakes: 10

Next year hopefuls (I gave many of the following this year off so they will be ready to go): eastern indigos again, eastern massasaugas, gila monsters, giant argentine tegus, green tree pythons, olive pythons, and african bush vipers and a few other surprises.

IMPORTANT QUESTION: What are the herp laws in Phoenix Arizona? What restrictions do they have on large constrictors, venomous (types of venomous), crocs, etc. Is there a permit system in place? Just curious.....my wife is from Phoenix and I promised her that one day we will be moving back to Arizona.

Good luck,

Rob,
You are correct, this will only be a sample. I understand that there are MANY breeders that do not come to these forums. I suppose I worded it a bit wrong. Our original discussion was how many are produced nation wide, this was just to see how many are produced from those we could get to contribute.

Laws in Arizona.
1. No corcs/gators.....period. Outlawed those back in the 80's or late 70's. I think the 80's is more accurate.
2. Only venomous you can have are the non protected rattlers FROM ARIZONA. You can not bring in ANY other venomous from anywhere else. There is a permit you can get for non AZ. venomous, I THINK, but it has to be for educational purposes or something like that. You cannot buy, sell, or even trade native rattlers. I can go out, collect my nag limit, keep them here, but cannot sell or trade them. I can "gift" them to you (in other words, give them away) that is it.
3. Cannot collect Gilas. In fact, the laws are so strict on them that you cannot even touch one in the wild if you see one. People have been sited for moving them off the road when road crusing.
4. No restrictions on large constrictors. I have owned or still do own, boas, retics, burms, etc. I know people that have anacondas as well.

Here is the link to Az F&G is you care to look at specifics.
you can read some things there.

as far as other venomous that is not native, you CAN get a permit for such species. Here is the problem, it is a "zoo" permit. I guess the state inspects you land which has to be a comercial site, and whatnot. Problem is, GOOD LUCK getting one. many people have tried.

Thanks Brian, that is what I was afraid of.....I would have to exhaust every known contact/network/pull of power I know to make this happen...oh well, it'll be a few years before I move so perhaps they will revise their current standing (or maybe make it even more restrictive). GOod luck with your research, Rob
