Hi All! (Spud? Easy Worms?)

LizardLadyAma Feb 21, 2004 06:56 AM

Hi Everyone!

I was just lurking a little and was wondering how Spud was doing? I am very jealous of her being in Cali with me and her friends still here in the cold northeast! BRRR!

I was also wondering what type of worm I can raise easily to feed my beardies and various others with? I am sick of crix and it's hard to get them delivered here this time of year since it's so cold! (Thank goodness that the beardlets (haha) are born in warm weather!)

So anyway, just wanted to pop in and say hi! So...

HI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I share your weather pains

I use silkworms as food for my geckos and my beardie. I'd imagine with a little initial investment you could get a good silkworm colony going. You'd just have to buy chow in the winter, and you should be able to find mulberry leaves in the summer. In fact, I just started a smaller breeding colony, they're still worms (Although large) right now. If I have any luck, I'll let you know. I'll most likely have many more eggs than I know what to do with.

Hey Kelly

Silkworms are actually A LOT easier than people think they are

Granted, it costs more to set up and get going, but well worth it in the long run

To breed them don't you need to keep moths?? I haven't read much and probably should before starting up a conversation... haha

Email me later and I will give you suggestions The moths only actually live about a week and they don't eat or anything. They come out of the cocoons, breed, lay eggs and die LOL

Hey Kelly,

Spud is loving the 60-70 degree weather out here. Although it has been a litle rainy lately ( We Californians will whine about anything but SUN!) In case you didn't see her earlier photo spread I'll repost (sorry folks!) I switched to silkworms and Spud and Fuego LOVE them! I don't know how easy they are to raise as I just started with them. Rob (wideglide) gave tips on how to raise them and I am going to try.

Here's Spud after she met her first cat!
