Any Indiana Herpers out there?

Chrysemys Feb 21, 2004 10:54 AM

If you are, what kind of turtles have you seen or caught? I really want to find a spotted population. I am located in the central part of the state, right below Indy. I can't wait until it warms up to get back out in the feild.

Hi Chris-

Just and old man located in Terre Haute interested in field herping for snakes.

Interested?

Dave

I am in Greenwood, not too far. I am interested in pretty much anything cold blooded. I am only 16, so its hard for me to get out. I am limited to areas close by. But since I am getting my license in the next week or so my options will be open. If your interested in herpin with someone my age I would be interested, lol. I am sure you could teach me a thing or two. I havent really tried herpin for snakes, but this year I am in the process in making some snake sticks, so I was planning on lookin for some in the spring and summer. I would love to get a close look at a Copperhead. In the past I pretty much just herped for turtles., and the few snakes that I have stumbled upon.

No problem with age, and, as far as teaching a thing or two, I am sure you hold your own. It seems to be a task to find someone to go out and herp. My wife & 9 yr old grandson go which is great. I am into the identifying and recording by pictures of our find in the wild. I think the Hot snakes of Indiana are interesting also, but, I am no Animal Planet type scientest who whips one up by his tail while doing a tap dance.

What got you into field herping?

Dave

Yeah I am into photography as well. I am taking a photography class in school and am learning a lot.

What got me into herping... Well I was always into the outdoors since I can remember. It started out just going down to the creek catching crawdads when I was like 10. Then one year, think I was 12, I caught a hatchling snapper. Ever since then I have been addicted. I am also a avid fisherman/hunter. I just like being outside.

So where do you usually go? Do you have some secret spots? I am craving for a new spot. Since I am just getting my license I havent gotten to go to far. Theres a golf course close to my house that I use to ride my bike to that had a good population of Midland Painteds and Snappers. A few snakes here and there. How far of a drive is it from Greenwood to Terra Haute(spelling)? I dont think its more than a 30min drive is it?

Yes I have some good spots. Terre Haute has a lot of good woods and waters.

Side subject: Interested in Pan Fishing? I have a group on MSN titled Indiana PanFishing.

Cut & paste that and give us a look.

My E-mail is OlePanFishDave@msn.com

Looking forward to meeting you. Terre Haute is good one hour from your location. Planning to go to the Reptiles at fairgrounds this Sunday?

Yeah I panfish for sunfish and bluegill. I havent gotten a chance to go Crappie fishin yet, but I heard it was a lot of fun. I will check out the link.

I do usually go to the Reptile Shows. I went last time and sold off all of my Leos. I use to breed them. I might go this time. A friend of mine wanted to go and see what it was like. I will email you when I know for sure. Since I dont have my license yet I will have to bum a ride off of my parents. I get my license next Thursday.

Do you own any herps? If so what? I have had lots of herps over the years. At the time I have a Softy and a Beardie. I did have a group of 8 Leos but I sold them all. I am gonig to catch a Midland Painted this spring and keep it. There isnt a real problem since theres so many. I am thinking about selling my Beardie and getting some kind of small tortise, maybe a Russian.

Hi,

I understand you are interested in finding a spotted population. Although I dont know of any in Indiana, if I did I certainly wouldnt tell anyone. This species is in big trouble. Here in Illinois there is only one population. I know exactly where it is but would never tell anyone. This population only consists of 300 turtles, mostly adults. My point is that anybody who is willing to give out any info on localities should not be allowed to post it publicly on this forum. You dont konw who people are and you could easily give info to a collector or someone that would wipe out the population. I am not saying that you are a collector but if anyone does have info of such, email it privatly. I'm sorry if I got a little of subject. By the way, im 15 in the Chicago area so if you ever get up here I could show you some areas for good herping.
