savannah morphology question i keep on forgetting to aks....

bengalensis Jun 09, 2003 02:48 PM

Has any seen a Sav with big crests over its eyes? I remeber having a monitor husbandy book as a child that showed a big savannah with these huge Neantertal-ish brow ridges over each eye. At the time I thought it hideous, but now Im sort of curious to see one again.
thanks,
Michelle

on the top of the head near the back? If so those are muscles and develop that way determined on how much they use there jaws. For instance if it has been feeding mainly on something like snails and using the muscles to crush the shell. Then the muscles will grow and devlop into the large bulges on the head.

Those ridges are fairly unique and from what I've seen they use them for scraping earth from the sides of burrows. They probably protect the eyes from dust and debris as well.

Are there pictures of these "horned" Savannahs? Have you seen any during your trips to Ghana? That is something that I would love to see. Well wait, could you even call them horned?

Forgive me I ask alot of questions.
By the way, I've decided to start breeding the Savs. I have all light colored from the pastel to the hypo and a tan/choco.

You never posted pics of a tan/chocolate sav?
Any idea of the sexes of your group?
Cheers. D.

No not really. Gator is my tan/choco male. My pastel is female and my hypo is still unknown but looks female more and more. That is my crew. I was hoping the hypo was male. Gator has issues and has tried to kill two seprate females even when intorduced on neutral ground. So I'm looking for a male. Andrew has a very light colored male that I'm going to try and put the pastel and maybe the hypo with. That is my plan.

Is there a direct coorelation to the region, and this distinctive anatomical attribute?? Different soil consistencies perhaps?? If so, then where is this feature most frequently observed?
Thanks for any info...
