hog humidity level

polosue25 Feb 21, 2004 03:48 PM

just got my first western hog a couple days ago and she's doing well so far. She's absolutely beautiful. Wondering about the humidity prefs---according to the meter it's almost 50% humidity in her box, she's on aspen with a water dish and a heat source at the opposite end from the water. Is this too humid? should I take the water out and mist or put it back as a little moisture is needed? There is also a humidifier in the room....not sure what the general humidity there is.
Thanks

Not sure what the more experienced people will say to this, but I keep my western hogs much the same as my corns. They have an average daytime temp of 85 and the humidity stays between 50 and 65% steadily. The only time I mist is when they go into shed phase, and then I lightly mist the cage once a day to spike the humidy to around 85% and keep a constant humidity of around 70%. This seems to help them shed completely. In any case, I've never had a hog or a corn retain eye caps or tail shed since I've been following this method.

Like I said, I'm not the most experienced person in the world, and I could be wrong, but this works for me. Hope it helps.
