let's see...there's Char's on Montrose, S&S Exotics off of 59 North(worth the drive out even if you're just looking, and good, cheap feeders), and Petco(whom I work for) nearly everywhere, including a store in Katy, off of Mason rd. I can tell you that S&S'll probably be cheapist, except I tend to add to the household each time I set foot in there
Petco's rat prices are as follows; I know they suck, but hey...

small -- $4.99
medium -- $5.49
large -- $5.99
jumbo -- $6.99 or $7.99 (I should know this - it's myt own dept. - but it's 10ish at night, and I've been up and moving since 6am)

Paridiso came across a good store on Fondren, but considering you mentioned Katy, that may be useless for you. I'd head to S&S, or to Petco, since you said you were having trouble finding some.

Hope this helps
Kim

hey fatratboopsy, did you get any interesting mice in the other day?

fatratboopsy Feb 21, 2004 10:29 PM

nah, but I did get stuck helping out at the store on Westheimer, and managed to grab a long-haired B&W female who's already pregnent, and two steel blue babies, one of each sex.

If I get a response back soon, I may be heading up to Arlington tomorrow to pick up a new snake...I bid on a viper boa on reptid and won...you not only need to check out that site, but go and look for pics of candoia aspera - I've got the pics of the kid I'm going to get, if you want I can send them...they're in a bis-honker zip file...took me about 6 minutes to download them, and I'm running on a POS dial-up line (AOL) and am currently at 46670bps...give me a holler if you wanna see

Sure send them over

almost forgot:
I know it sounds weird, but try giving any feed stores in your area a call...the best breed-for-feeder rats I've EVER had came from a feed store in Santa Fe(TX, down near Galveston). They were cheap, never got sick or mean towards myself/ their offspring, produced huge litters of big pups, and lasted nearly 4 years.

May be worth a bit of research

Hey, thanks for the info. My problem is that PetCo is out of rats all the time. Seems like they have rats about 30% of the time - can you complain (for me) to the store manager? I'd buy them there all the time (Katy/Mason closest store to me) if they would only have them. Thanks for the info.

P.S. Why doesn't PetCo have frozen (big) rats? Regards.

I'll try my best to politely grumble to their manager, but in the meanwhile, and when I go in tomorrow I'll do one better - find out what day they get their animal shipments in...that way you can plan to be there asap to ensure you get what you need. I'll even put in a hint to up the (jumbo?) order quantity. On the frozen, I've no clue why they don't have frozen jumbos; I've never set foot near that store, and I'm used to having both live and frozen all the time, so it's a mystery as to why they don't. I can tell you that some stores specialize (kinda) in/on one department, and they may not feel they're a high-volume reptile-based small animal selling store, so they keep their minimums low. I will try to find out for you though; look for a post from me on it tomorrow.

Okay, here's what I was told:

The live animals come in on Friday mornings. I also was told that they currently aren't carrying the jumbo frozen rats, but was told it wouldn't be a problem to order them for you - all they need to know is how many and how often. I forgot the name of the manager I spoke with, but I told them I'd give them a call back with an aproximate count. (made up some bs about having a regular of mine moving to Katy, and that I was wanting to make sure he got his dinners...)
Am I right you need the jumbos? The only reason I'm assuming that is your name involves one big ass snake. If I'm wrong, let me know, and I can have them change/ increase their large rat order just as easily.

That should help immensely, and glad I could be of assistence.
