What Do Breeders Do When They Can't Sell

clownloach Feb 21, 2004 08:33 PM

Hi all, this business seems to be selling an enormous amount of boas, considering the high price range that some of these boas are going for. But I am curious, what do the breeders do with their boas when they can't sell them? Are they auctioned, do they reduce prices? etc.... Or are names being made up to boost the prices? Just curious. Would love the info.

1. I think the general public doesn't understand the enormous demand for reptiles that there is. They are becomming more and more main stream. If you put a single boa in every pet store it would take millions to fill the demand (there are 3 mom and pop style pet stores plus the 2 big players in Southern California (PetSmart and Petco) just in our small town. According to Pet Product News' article last year the reptile and amphibian section of the pet industry was the only sector to grow in the last 3 years.

2. Usually if a breeder can't move his offspring they'll get offered up to wholesalers who fill the pet store's needs.

Any business bases their prices on supply and demand. The less available and the more demand the higher the price. If the animals are priced correctly they sell. If they sit around month after month, the price might have to be reconsidered. There are other variables such as reputation of the breeder, the parents of the animal and the appearances of the actual offspring. I would say that the highest dollar value animals I produced last year were also the fastest sellers! Of course there is another variable I forgot to mention............how badly the breeder wants to sell or not sell the individual animal!!! LOL

I might have just the sunglow for you this year if the fertility Gods are smiling!!! There might be some sunglow arabesque's around the end of June if I haven't just jinxed myself. LOL P.S. I wish I could take pictures like you and Charles E. Besides having a terrific collection you take awesome pictures of them giving me chest pains when my heart stops!! Good luck this year.
