Silkworm moths not hatching

shopaholic Feb 21, 2004 08:47 PM

Hi gang: Many of my silkies have gone through the entire process and become moths, produced fertile eggs but there are a bunch of moths now that are not hatching properly. We see a stain on the end of the caccoon, but the moth does not break through. One broke through today but could not make it the rest of the way. What is going on? Also, we experienced more die offs towards the end of the cycle on these guys. What do you think could be happening? Thanks-Maggie

Make sure the humidity is right (80% or so) and they have enough heat. It is probably the humidity.

Hi: I never knew or read that higher humidity was needed for the moths to hatch out. Perhaps I should place the caccoons into a sweater box? Thanks-Maggie
