I have used the red incandlesent (sp?) bulbs to view for a few hours after dark. Strangly though, I have noticed some of my snakes will only come out of there hides after those lights go out and it is completly dark. Thoughts or experiences?

after the lights go out, I generally use a small flashlight. But this is only if I need to check something or want to take a quick peek at them. I generally try to avoid bothering them at night though...

What do they use in zoos?
The Bronx Zoo in NY has a "World of Darkness" exhibit. It looks like they use black lights or something like that, however I do not recall anything glowing (people's white tee shirts or teeth)like you'd get with a black light. It's very dark in there but there's enough illumination to see the bats, mammals, and the big boa. It's a faint purple/violet glow.
Perhaps you could try to contact them and ask about it. That would be the New York Zoological Park.
Good luck!
