Live plants in Cobra display cage?

snakum Jun 09, 2003 03:59 PM

I am working on a couple designs for attractive display cases for Naja Haje or Annulifera and later a Black Pakistani, and I have built a prototype with a raised floor in which the water bowl is sunken (level with floor of cage). I'd like to put a live plant that thrives on artificial light (I forget the name of it) in a sunken planter, but I don't know if there are any caveats associated with this such as insect problems, humidity problems, etc.

Do you guys do this with Cobras or other Elapids? Is there anything I should know about live plants in Elapid cages?

Danke Schon,

Phil

I want to provide heat primarily from a heating pad or 'heating rock'. Any caveats there with Elapids?

I would not use live plants in a cobra enclosure. Cobras like to roam and the plants would probably end up getting trashed or uprooted, they also crap alot and there is no way I know of to disinfect or clean a live plant. As far as hot rocks go they should never be used under any circumstances, they get way too hot and have caused serious injuries. Heat from above or from underneath.
BTW I have never kept elapids and all the things I've mentioned were related to me by other keepers.
Good luck.
Vic.
