Looking for opinions on the various mite products: Black Knight, Provent-A-Mite & Reptile Relief...

Tigergenesis Feb 22, 2004 06:57 AM

Interested in hearing any personal experiences with these products and how you use them. I thought perhaps I'd purchase on to have on hand 'just in case'.

Reptile Relief sounds to possibly be the safest (from what I've read, heard some horror stories on the other 2), but I understand it won't work as a preventive - only works when you have mites.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

I've used Black Knight to good effect with no harm to any of my animals. I've killed lizards and snakes while useing provent-a-mite even though I followed the directions exactly. I've used reptile relief (also known as DeFlea) on many snakes without harm to the snake. I actually do use the reptile relief as a preventative type treatment. I do a number of educational shows with my snakes along with other members of my herp society. I always give them a squirt of de-flea before putting them back in my collection. I also put them in a newly cleaned cage that has been sprayed down with Black Knight. I haven't gotten any mites in my collection since doing this but I can't tell if it's the deflea or the black knight in any case it's cheap insurance and doesn't appear to harm my animals. I will never use provent-a-mite again.

I've used Provent-a-mite on literally thousands of animals in the past three years and have never seen one ill effect from it. I use it on any animal that comes into my collection. In my opinion this stuff is the best product ever marketed for prevention or eradication of mite infestation in captive reptiles.

I have also used reptile relief quite a bit recently. It does kill mites, but it takes longer and requires more applications than provent-a-mite. I have one instance where some animals that were being treated with this stuff died, I can't say this was the cause since the animals weren't necropsied(they were ribbon snakes), but I suspect it was.

Oh, just for the record I don't own the thousands of animals I've treated with these products. I manage the reptile department of a large pet store. I do use Provent-a-mite in my personal collection wich consists of about 40 animals, mostly ball pythons.
