15 gallon for a apir of brown anoles?

triturus Feb 22, 2004 09:48 AM

I have a male brown anole who is doing a lot of head bobs and flashing of his throat fan. Is their room in a 15 gallon tall aquarium for a pair of brown anoles? The would each have their own basking sight.

My recomendation is no. One thing you left out is the sexes of the anoles but I am going to assume 2 males 1 female in 15 gal tank.

1. The males will fight A LOT. Until one proves dominance they will fight in this small of an enclosure.

2. The female will get no rest. No matter what side of the tank she will be harrased. (Especially if the temp and humidity is right for breeding)

3. This is an alternate possiblity.... They all get along and never fight.....This is a slim possiblity that in my experience I have never seen accomplished.

Now if it is 3 females you will be much better off. Females are not territorial and are less likely to show agression towards each other.

With that said, I would recommend a 20 gallon at the very least for 3 anoles of any type. I personally would use 30, but that is me...

Hope this helps

Two males in one tank? How brain dead do you think I am (just kidding, hehehe).

The stand I have can accomodate two 15 gallons. I was thinking of purchasing another and keeping two females in a seperate tank. My basic setup is this: 15 watts fluorscent plus 60 watt incandescent, soil substrate, bamboo, a piece of cork, and a big pothos.

I've decided to buy a 20 gallon and turn it into a vivarium. I'll keep two females in it and place the male in the vivarium every once in a while.

This should definetly work. You may even be able to get away with just using the 20 gallon since it is 1m 2f. You are making it into a vivarium, so there will be plenty of places for your females to go and hide from the male if they get annoyed with him

Good Luck!

(P.S. glad I was wrong on the 2 males thing hehe.)
