Runaway mealies

lostkauze Feb 22, 2004 10:05 AM

Currently i have my mealworms in a small plant saucer... maybe 4 inches in diameter. The mealies always get out, and the next morning there are no more because they are all under the paper towels. I've gotten other rock things to pu the mealies in, but they still escape. How do i stop these evil runaways?

place the mealworms in a ceramic little dish or some made outof glass which they cant climb..i use ceramic dishes and little glass candle holders and it looks good.So the next time u seen none their u know your gecko got to them.

I had this same problem. I never tried using a ceramic dish, but I eventually figured out that the mealworms were escaping because they didn't have a water source in their dish. I figured this out because they would always end up in the water bowl that was exactly like their dish except that it had water :P. So, I started putting little pieces of grape in with them, and now they don't even try to escape. It worked like a charm. Oh, I also usually put a little bit of oatmal or something in there too (not too much so the gecko can still see them) so that they have less reason to leave.

I was using jar lids but now I'm using this little clear plastic dish, that looks like a petri dish. The wall is about an inch high and the mealies can't climb over it. (I got so tired of sifting through the whole cage trying to find all the stray mealies!) I still use jar lids for my little ones though...It's easy for the adults to reach over an inch wall but I don't want my little ones to struggle.

You can find them all over, at science supply places. I did a search for "petri dish" and this was the first hit:
