what's up with vermiculite?

IcedGoddess Feb 22, 2004 11:51 AM

I finished my rack, wired the heat tape and put the back on. Got everyone in their bigger boxes and set up a nest box for Ruby. I found a HUGE squeeze-pack of aspen shavings for 10$ at petsmart. Then I went looking for vermiculite for the nest box. None to be found I went to a couple garden centers, and looked at a few places on-line, but only one place was still selling vermiculite. Home Depot and Linders both said they no longer carry it because of aspestos(sp?)?

I used it last year and loved it. Now all I could get was sphagnum moss. It's okay, and Ruby seems to like it fine, but I still think vermiculite was nicer. Is it really bad now? Or can I go ahead and order it online and use it again this year?

vermiculite is for incubation box ....use shagnum for the nesting/laying boxes........

...look around....it's out there....

far as I know.....one company had asbestos in it's product..and it was shut down......

I used moss for the lay box and vermiculate for the incubator. Just order it online as i agree that is is better than the moss for incubation. I heard a little about the company who used asbestos but not much, as here the garden stores carry local made products and asbestos control is good.Who did you decide breed Ruby to this year?

I'll let her keep the moss for laying, but I'll definalty pick up some vermiculite for incubating. I used it for both last year and liked how "clean" it was. The moss seems "dirty".

I bred her to my SMR anery Breaden:

Should get all anery's, unless he's het for amel also, which is a big possibility since Don doesn't specifically breed to get anerys. I'm looking forward to seeing baby anery's and hopefully some baby snows too. I thought he was too small, but they sure did get excited over each other on their last few dates, and she's been growing wider (rounder) almost daily, so I think I have some on the way

Breaden and Ruby are both such mellow snakes, I can't imagine a rowdy or nippy baby coming from them. I also hope I get more than a couple snows, because I've only seen one other snow with her coloring, not too much yellow, and lots of "peachish". I hope I can get that from Breaden, he is a nice light anery, with a lot of tan/red overtones in his saddles. So we'll see

Good luck with your two. I'd breed the new amel too, but she's not very friendly, so I'm not sure I want to pass her genes on untill I can at least mellow her out a bit.

>>I went to four different stores and all were out of vermiculite.
I think I am glad.
I like the way the sphagnum holds moisture.

But don't these plant stores realize snakes don't care if it's planting season? lol

I was told at Home Depot that they pulled it off the shelves because of the aspestos. They must have all carried the ONE brand that was found to have aspestos in it! I'm ganna order it on-line, big apple has it still, or at least when I checked last week they did.

IMHO Most stores do not start ordering the stuff till late feb early march for the spring. I usually look a small mom and pop hardware or garden store and they order it for me. An 18 pound bag usually runs $17. This is much cheaper than home depot.
