Veiled Babies

demon_hunter Feb 22, 2004 12:00 PM

In the past two weeks, i have had baby veileds hatching, and right now they seem pretty good, except that when i stop by to see them, some just close their eyes for a long time. Is this bad? should i be worrying? And i also have one baby with what seems to be a birth-defect, it has two legs that seem to be like double-jointed or crooked, and he dosent move much, with its eyes closed too. Im worried please help.

Hi!

About the baby with the double-joint... Are you sure the legs are not broken??

they might be, but how could it have broken its legs? while it was hatching?

It's impossible for anyone to help you unless you tell us how you're keeping them? Caging? How many to a cage? Lighting? Temps? Hydration? Prey items? Supplements? What you describe could be due to a lack or excess in any of the above.

hi, i currently keep them in a 10 gallon tank. I have about 16 in a tank. I know its kinda small, but for the time being, it would have to be that way. for the lightning, i have a daylight bulb 65 watts, with a reptisun 8.0. i feed them fruit flies, and sometimes some pinheads. and i water them regularly. right now i havent given them any supplements of any kind.

1)What's the temp in there???? You could well be cooking them. A glass tank provides very little of the temperature gradient they need and none of the air flow.

2)They need to be separated ASAP into much larger cagews, preferably mesh. These guys stress the hell out of each other.

3)The faster you can get them into individual cages the better. For cheap, home made baby cages and baby care instructions see
http://www.adcham.com/html/husbandry/babycare.html

You need to make some major changers immediately or you'll start seeing those babies start to die off within the next week or two.

Hi again!

First - how old are the babies?

As long as they are less than a month old, I think you can keep them together still! This makes it easier to feed them. But smaller groupes might be a good idea...

You need to dust your feeder insects with calcium and vitamins every time you feed!!! Or else you will have a lot of babies with MBD -> broken legs...
