underambitious male

hemingway Feb 22, 2004 12:10 PM

My beardies (2 females and a male) came out of brumation on January 14, and I was hoping to breed them. They're all almost 2 years old and more than adequate size. Unfortunately, the male isn't breeding them, at least that I have seen. I've seen the male beard-up and head bob in his own cage, and sometimes in the female's cage (they slowly bob back, but no waving), but never never try to breed. I've put them in his cage, him in theirs, with both females or one at a time. Also tried o nhte floor with a spotlight as I've seen suggested, but nothing. He's the only male I have, so "inspiring" him with another male is not an option. Any other sugestions as to how I could get them to breed? Thanks

Kris

Sorry..lol
It will eventually happen, when all are ready. If he hasn't bred before, maybe he just needs time to figure things out. I think I would keep it on a one on one basis since two hot Mamas at once may be a bit intimidating for him.
Are you sure you want to breed two females at the same time? Yikes, that's a WHOLE BUNCH of hatchlings, a couple times over..
Good Luck

i read somewhere that some people in a zoo used a mirror to get the male to breed im not sure what type of lizard it was but maybe this will work with yours...

ready to breed, we have a beautiful male with irridescent scales we wanted to breed, a big boy, GG and looks fully mature. Last year at almost age two he was much like yours, would display some breeding traits, then find a corner and go to sleep...... this year we have to keep the females away from him, he's like lightning on them if given the chance.

We have also found that the lighter color or hypo dragons are slower to breed.

Thanks for the advice. An interesting similarity, though -- he is a hypo male as well. I guess I may just have to be patient.
